Description

Fashion plate; hand-colored aquatint from Rudolph Ackermann’s "Repository of Arts", Series 2, Vol. V, Plate 38, No. 30, June 1, 1818. Depicts woman standing in a long purple dress and yellow headdress. Off the shoulder neckline is trimmed with a scalloped edge, short white full sleeves. Empire waistline is trimmed with a scalloped edge under the bust and flows down into a long skirt hemmed right above the ankle. The purple skirt is trimmed with a layer of lace and three layers of white and purple ribbon ornamented with small bows. The skirt is ornamented with festoons of white satin and large pink roses. The toque headdress is made of a yellow patterned gauze and ornamented with white plumes. Pearl necklace, white elbow length gloves, white stockings and slippers.

Original 1818 description:
"A white net gown over a pale blush-coloured slip; the body is made tight to the shape, and cut very low all round the bust, which is delicately shaded by an under front of white lace. The bust of the dress is tastefully ornamented by rich white silk trimming; a band of white silk tassels tied in front, gives an elegant finish to the body of the dress. The skirt is trimmed with draperies of net interspersed with bunches of roses; these draperies are placed high, and the skirt is finished round the bottom by a narrow trimming of a novel description, composed of satin and a rich flounce of blond lace. Short full sleeve. Head-dress a toque composed of richly embroidered gauze, ornamented with an elegant plume of white feathers, which are placed so as to fall over on the right side. Pearl necklace and ear-rings. White kid gloves, and white satin shoes."

"The Repository of Arts" was a monthly periodical published from 1809 to 1829 in London, England by Rudolph Ackermann, originally a saddle-maker turned bookseller and businessman.
