Description

Folding fan; sixteen sticks and two guards made of bone with double-sided paper leaf. White paper leaf features a background of silver, blue, and gold embossed designs of plants, flowers, and birds, and has a thin silver border across top of leaf. On the front of the leaf are three printed and hand-colored late 18th century scenes framed by embossed paper borders of heavy swirling designs in silver, blue, and gold. Scene on leaf's left side depicts two women in nature, with a upperclass woman seated at the front with a bag at her feet and holding the branch of a tree, and a servant behind her holding a basket in one hand and pointing behind them with the other. Central scene depicts two upperclass couples in a garden setting with trees, a building, and a large flower pot on a pedestal behind them. One couple sits close together holding hands and looking at or listening to the couple next to them. The second woman is standing and holds sheet music in her hands. She looks down at the man next to her who is seated and is holding his hand up as if discussing something with the woman. The final scene furthest to the right features a woman and two children, a girl and a boy, with a town in the background. The girl holds a basket of roses in front of her and the boy is kneeling down, but it's unknown what he is doing because the fan has been tied together here for stabilization. Front side of sticks feature piercing designs reminiscent of a root system and four-petaled flowers interspersed with silver inlays of leaves. Right guard features an oval mirror about one inch long with an ornate brass frame at the top of the guard and is bordered by geometric silver inlay and accented by piercings showing silver beneath them. Left guard features large silver inlay design of a tulip and has similar geometric silver inlay border and piercings with silver beneath. Reverse side of leaf features sprawling silver design of flowers, leaves and butterflies on a white paper ground with silver border across top. Design frames a printed and hand-colored central scene of a man and two women in late 18th century clothing sitting closely together on a dirt embankment talking to one another. They are framed by a wooden fence and foliage in the foreground, and in the background is a lake and building. Reverse side of sticks only shows piercings and has no silver inlay. Embossed brass loop with mother of pearl washers. White cord with silk and metallic thread tassel attached to loop.
