Description

Fashion plate; hand-colored aquatint from Rudolph Ackermann's "Repository of Arts", Series 2, Volume II, Plate 29, No. 11, 1 November 1816. Depicts a woman in a white and blue evening dress with necklace, bracelets, gloves, and shoes sitting on a chair. The dress is a low cut, white and blue striped dress with a white lace design on the neckline, sleeves, and the hem. Her hair is curled with no head piece. A two-strand ruby necklace with a cross and two ruby arm bands that sit right below the sleeves. White elbow length gloves on her hands. Blue and gold striped shoes on her feet. She is sitting on a chair with gold legs and a white tapestry laid on the chair.

Original 1816 description from page 299 and 300: "A lilac and white stiped gauze dress over a white satin slip; the bottom of the skirt is ornamented with five rows of white silk trimming, of a very light and elegant description: it has just been introduced, and the pattern has more novelty than any thing we have seen for some time: a single flounce of deep blond lace completes the trimming. The body is also very novel; the upper part is formed of lace, and the lower of gauze, to correspond with the dress: the latter is quite tight to the shape, but the former has an easy fulness, which forms that shape in a manner extremely advantageous to the figure. The sleeve is short and very full; it is composed of lace, looped high, and finished by a trimming to correspond with that on the skirt. The hair is full dressed, without any ornament. Necklace, cross, armlets, and bracelets of rubies. White satin slippers, and white kid gloves."

"The Repository of Arts" was a monthly periodical published from 1809 to 1829 in London, England by Rudolph Ackermann, originally a saddle-maker turned bookseller and businessman.
